Skydive Virginia! has excellent facilities that support
our skydiving community. These include the airport and its
supportive Industrial Development Authority, the Fixed Base Operator
and the local towns in the area that appreciate our business.
Skydive Virginia!
Skydive Virginia! is physically located at the southwest corner of
Freeman Field, in close proximity to Route 33 for easy access.
There's plenty of parking. Our office and classrooms are in a
climate-controlled trailer and we have a large, carpeted outdoor pavilion
for packing and socializing. We don't yet have running water, but we
do provide chilled water. There are also covered picnic tables and an
additional tarp-covered area for dining and relaxing.
On those days which the winds are running east-west (most days) the
wind lines up with the runway very nicely. Not having the wind come
off the trees or building makes sailing much smoother. Also, you can
overshoot or undershoot by about 1/2 of a mile and still land on the field.
For those days which the winds are running north-south, the options
are more limited. There are many
outs to the north, but
not many to the south. In this case, as long as you stay away from
the tree-line or the buildings and fly conservatively,
you will be safe. We are much more likely to go on weather hold when
the predominant winds are running towards the south.
The Airport
(LKU)
The airport itself is a full service untowered airport.
They can make repairs to your aircraft, fill the tanks
(100LL or Jet-A), put air in the tires, get coffee for
pilots, and even have facilities for you to take a shower. There
is an IFR approach to the airport for those pilots desiring this.
There are two runways. Runway 09/27 is approximately 4300 feet by 100
feet of concrete. This lighted runway is more than adequate for most
general aviation purposes including all small twins and a fairly large
cessna citation that is stored there.
The other runway, 10/28, is approximately 2000 feet by 60 feet of firm,
unlighted, level, turf.
If you're flying in, check out the AWOS-3 on 119.47 and make sure you
call in on the CTAF on 122.725. Don't forget to check in with flight
service for NOTAMs regarding traffic patterns, current activities,
beacon outages, etc, before you arrive. Airborne skydivers will
generally
be at the northwest corner of the field due to the prevailing winds.
An overhead view of the airport and its surrounding area is available
